What is CrossFit?
Forging Elite Fitness
CrossFit begins with a belief in fitness. The aim of CrossFit is to forge a broad, general and inclusive fitness. We have sought to build a program that will best prepare trainees for any physical contingency — not only for the unknown, but for the unknowable. After looking at all sport and physical tasks collectively, we asked what physical skills and adaptations would most universally lend themselves to performance advantage. Capacity culled from the intersection of all sports demands would quite logically lend itself well to all sport. In sum, our specialty is not specializing.
CrossFit is many things. Primarily, it’s a fitness regimen developed by Coach Greg Glassman over several decades. He was the first person in history to define fitness in a meaningful, measurable way (increased work capacity across broad time and modal domains). CrossFit itself is defined as that which optimizes fitness (constantly varied functional movements performed at relatively high intensity). CrossFit is also the community that spontaneously arises when people do these workouts together. In fact, the communal aspect of CrossFit is a key component of why it’s so effective.

CrossFit targets the major components of physical fitness:
- Cardiorespiratory Fitness
- Muscular Strength and Endurance
- Flexibility, Power, Speed
- Agility & Balance
CrossFit prepares you for the unknown because life comes at you fast

What is the CrossFit method and how is it different?
CrossFit is an evidence-based fitness program. Meaningful statements about safety, efficacy and efficiency — the three most important and interdependent facets of any fitness program — can be supported only by measurable, observable, and repeatable facts, (i.e., data). The CrossFit methodology depends on full disclosure of methods, results and criticisms…
We offer the world’s most useful definition of fitness: increased work capacity across broad time and modal domains. Capacity is the ability to do real work, which is measurable using the basic terms of physics (force, distance and time). Life is unpredictable (much more so than sport) so real world fitness must be broad and not specialized, both in terms of duration and type of effort (time and modal domains).
While it challenges the world’s fittest, the CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability, making it the perfect application for any committed individual, regardless of experience.
Commercial Gyms vs. The CrossFit Method
Rocky Top CrossFit is a professional coaching/training facility. You will have multiple certified CrossFit trainers coaching every single day. At a local ‘globo gym’ like the YMCA or 24 hr. fitness, you may only pay $50 a month. This small fee simply gives you access to their gym. Inquire about personal training there and you’ll see the value of our Coaching Membership. In our mid-atlantic region, 12-15 personal training sessions can cost you over $700 per month plus the cost of membership/access fees.
We are a (incredibly small) fraction of that price — you WILL get better results, have a support group of fellow like-minded athletes, and actually WANT to work out!
Our goal is to bring our Coaching Membership to you at the most affordable rates possible. In addition to professional training, every new member will also receive a New Member packet, filled with discounts to local industry-related partner locations and a free CrossFit nutritional packet. You won’t get that at your neighborhood Bally’s.
The CrossFit method is to establish a hierarchy of effort and concern that builds as follows:
- Diet: lays the molecular foundations for fitness and health.
- Metabolic Conditioning: builds capacity in each of three metabolic pathways, beginning with aerobic, then lactic acid, and then phosphocreatine pathways.
- Gymnastics: establishes functional capacity for body control and range of motion.
- Weightlifting and Throwing: develop ability to control external objects and produce power.
- Sport: applies fitness in competitive atmosphere with more randomized movements and skill mastery.
